BOSTON- The year 2025 has been quite a season for Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony. He entered the year as the number one prospect in all of baseball, according to Baseball Prospectus, and posted otherworldly numbers in just over two months at Triple-A Worcester (.288/.423/.913). His lifelong dream came true on June 9 when he was called up to the Major Leagues, and since then, he has been a mainstay near the top of Boston’s batting order, as the Red Sox continue contending for their first postseason berth since 2021.
Today made the year even sweeter for Anthony. According to Jeff Passan, he and the Red Sox have reportedly agreed to an eight-year, $130 million contract extension that will keep him in a Boston uniform through the 2033 season. The deal, which covers the 2026–2033 seasons, carries an average annual value of $16.25 million and includes escalators that could raise its total value to $230 million, according to Chris Cotillo. It will based on his results in this year's Rookie of the Year voting and MVP voting beginning in 2031, along with All Star apperances in 2032 and 2033.
With this extension, the Red Sox have bought out the first three to four years of Anthony’s free agency, depending on his placement in the American League Rookie of the Year race. As a result, he will not become a free agent until the end of his age-29 season at the earliest.
In only 46 games played so far, Anthony has already shown Red Sox fans why he is considered a building block for the franchise’s future. In 190 plate appearances, he has produced a slash line of .283/.400/.828, with two home runs, 15 doubles, and 19 RBIs. He has seen most of his playing time in left field, right field, and at designated hitter.
This deal continues a trend set by Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow since taking over in the fall of 2023: lock up young talent early. It is a model that teams such as the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers have followed, leading to multiple postseason and World Series appearances for both clubs. Boston now appears ready to follow that same path.
Anthony’s extension is Breslow’s third of the 2025 season. In April, he signed fellow top prospect Kristian Campbell to an eight-year, $60 million deal, and 2024 trade acquisition Garrett Crochet to a six-year, $170 million contract. Breslow also extended Ceddanne Rafaela (eight years, $50 million) and Brayan Bello (six years, $55 million) early on in 2024 as well.
The deal will add yet another face of the franchise can look forward to rooting on for years to come. After the mishandling of star talent players such as Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts in the past, it appears that the Red Sox have learned from their mistakes, and look to create a more certain future for both the team and its fanbase.
