BRONX, NY- The Red Sox begin a four-game series against their archrival, the New York Yankees, this evening—a series that could very well be the deciding factor in a postseason appearance this October. However, help is on the way in the form of “The Password.”
First reported by Katie Morris-O’Day, Boston is calling up its top outfield prospect and third overall prospect, Jhostynxon Garcia, to the Major Leagues. This move comes after Wilyer Abreu suffered a right calf strain in the series finale against the Miami Marlins and was placed on the 10-day injured list.
This promotion follows a whirlwind of transactions involving the 26-man roster. In addition to Abreu’s injury, Rob Refsnyder was also placed on the injured list Monday due to an oblique strain. Ali Sanchez and Abraham Toro were designated for assignment, while Richard Fitts, David Hamilton, and recent signee Nathaniel Lowe were added to the active roster.
Garcia, signed as an international free agent by Boston in July 2019, has steadily risen through the ranks, becoming the next highly regarded prospect after the “Big 3” trio of Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell. A 2025 MLB Futures Game selectee, the 22-year-old split time between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, where he impressed. In 99 games, he batted .289/.363/.875 with 20 home runs and 73 RBIs, earning the No. 77 spot in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects.
He especially thrived in Worcester, hitting 17 of his 20 home runs in just 66 games. While he struck out 81 times during that span, he also drew 25 walks and has proven to be an all-around threat at the plate.
His nickname, “The Password,” comes from the difficulty many fans have pronouncing his name. But as he prepares for his Major League debut, fans will soon become very familiar with it.
Unfortunately, Garcia’s call-up comes at the expense of one of Boston’s best overall players: Abreu. Though optimistic about returning for the Yankees series, the team has opted to be cautious with his injury. He’s been placed on the injured list with no clear timetable for return. Abreu was hitting .253/.325/.811 with 22 home runs and 69 RBIs, all while playing Gold Glove-caliber defense in right field.
Boston hopes Garcia can help fill that void. After receiving the call-up around 2:00 p.m., he is currently en route to the Bronx to meet up with the team. He is not in the lineup for the first game, but Alex Cora likes to use pinch hitters in close situations, so he very well could appear sometime during the game tonight, and certainly will be getting his first start soon. For now, the Red Sox are set to begin the series at 7:15 p.m. EST.
